R-404A
R125/R143a/R…R-404A is a near-azeotropic HFC refrigerant blend (R-125/R-143a/R-134a) that became the dominant choice for commercial refrigeration following the CFC phase-out. Used extensively in supermarket display cases, cold storage, transport refrigeration, and ice machines, R-404A offers reliable performance across medium and low-temperature applications. However, with a GWP of 3,922, R-404A is a primary target of phase-down regulations worldwide. The EPA AIM Act, EU F-gas regulation, and California CARB rules are driving rapid transition to lower-GWP alternatives like R-448A, R-449A, and R-454C. Existing R-404A systems require diligent leak detection and maintenance to minimize emissions during the transition period.
