    R-32

    CH₂F₂

R-32 (difluoromethane, HFC-32) is a single component hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) that delivers strong cooling performance with significantly lower environmental impact, making it the leading replacement of high GWP blends like R 410A in new HVAC system designs. With a GWP of 675—approximately one-third that of R-410A—R-32 offers significant environmental benefits while maintaining excellent thermodynamic properties and energy efficiency. It is most commonly used in mini split heat pumps, ductless systems, and VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) installations, where its efficiency and lower GWP make it an ideal fit. R-32 is classified as A2L - low toxicity, mildly flammable, requiring specific safety measures in system design and installation. Proper leak detection is essential due to its flammability classification and to maximize environmental benefits through emission prevention.

    Key Information

Essential safety and exposure information for R-32

    Health Effects

    • Although R-32 is not toxic inhalations of high concentrations can cause headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, asphyxiation due to oxygen displacement
    • Contact with rapidly evaporating liquid R-32 can cause frostbite like injuries to skin or eyes.
    • As an A2L refrigerant, R-32 is mildly flammable and can ignite under the right conditions, especially near open flames, sparks, or hot surfaces.

    Common Sources

    • Split AC systems
    • VRF systems
    • Heat pumps
    • Ductless systems

    Regulatory Status

R‑32 is classified by ASHRAE Standard 34 as an A2L refrigerant (low toxicity, mildly flammable), and its use is governed by ASHRAE Standard 15, which sets requirements for ventilation, refrigerant concentration limits, and A2L leak detection in occupied spaces. The EPA recognizes R‑32 under its SNAP program (40 CFR Part 82) as an approved lower‑GWP alternative refrigerant subject to A2L safety controls. Related ASHRAE standards such as 62.1 (ventilation) and 90.1 (HVAC design) provide additional guidance, while NFPA 70 and NFPA 72 outline electrical safety and integration of A2L refrigerant detectors into alarm and control systems.
