Signs and Symptoms of Propane Gas Exposure

Learn to recognize the warning signs of propane gas exposure and what to do if you suspect a leak in your home or facility.
What Is Propane Gas?
Propane (C₃H₈) is a colorless, odorless hydrocarbon gas commonly used for heating, cooking, and industrial applications. An odorant called mercaptan is added to give propane its distinctive "rotten egg" smell, making leaks easier to detect.
Recognizing the Signs of Propane Exposure
Physical Symptoms
Exposure to propane gas can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe:
Mild Exposure:
- Headaches
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Nausea
- Fatigue or drowsiness
- Eye, nose, or throat irritation
Moderate to Severe Exposure:
- Difficulty breathing
- Rapid heartbeat
- Disorientation or confusion
- Loss of coordination
- Unconsciousness (in extreme cases)
Environmental Signs
In addition to physical symptoms, watch for these warning signs:
- Smell: A strong sulfur or "rotten egg" odor
- Sound: Hissing near gas lines or appliances
- Visual: Dead vegetation near propane lines, or white frost on tanks/regulators
What to Do If You Suspect a Propane Leak
- Do NOT create sparks – Avoid light switches, phones, or anything that could ignite the gas
- Evacuate immediately – Get everyone out of the building
- Move away – Go at least 100 feet from the suspected leak
- Call for help – Contact 911 and your propane supplier from a safe distance
- Do not return – Wait for emergency responders to declare the area safe
Preventing Propane Exposure
The best protection against propane exposure is early detection. Commercial and industrial facilities should implement:
- Fixed gas detection systems that continuously monitor for propane leaks
- Regular maintenance of propane appliances and supply lines
- Proper ventilation in areas where propane is stored or used
- Employee training on recognizing symptoms and emergency procedures
